Almost all people with atopic dermatitis have “staph” ( Staphylococcus aureus ) bacteria on their skin, compared with just about 5% of people without the skin condition. Tell your doctor about symptoms of an infection, such as honey-colored crusts, pus- or fluid-filled blisters, scaly red patches, swelling, or a fever.

Updated 7/66/67. One of the best rewards of being an esthetician is working with clients hands-on giving facials, peels and other treatments and visibly seeing the great results that both professional treatments and home care products can deliver. Plus, I love the one-on-one time connection—after all, it’s the reason why I got into this profession in the first place over 75 years ago. (You can read a bit more about me here.)

Symptoms: Itching or burning rough patches of skin that can’t be seen, but feel painful when rubbed dry lips raised, red, scaly bumps

However, not all red dry patches on the face can be exclusively attributed to environmental factors. Individuals may be suffering from a specific skin condition that will respond to a different type of treatment. Since dry facial skin can be the result of an actual skin problem, it may be necessary to consult a physician, in order to determine the best course of treatment for the red dry skin.

Seborrhoeic eczema has little or nothing to do with sebum (the oily secretion of the sweat glands), so the name is a poor one.

When my client, Tracey Schwartz first came to me complaining of dry, extremely red and sensitive skin, I ran through my usual list of questions for this type of skin. (Note: those who have eczema and rosacea will also benefit from the information in this post since both of these conditions are related to a weakened skin barrier which I discuss in great detail below.)

For instance, guttate psoriasis on the legs would appear in many separate, drop-like, small red psoriasis patches. However, plaque psoriasis on the legs often appears in large, shapeless patches with thick red skin or thick white scales.

Increased sensitivity to a yeast called Pityrosporum, a normal organism living on the skin, is thought to play a part in seborrhoeic eczema.

Severe facial psoriasis sometimes warrants treatment with tablets or injections such as methotrexate, ciclosporin, acitretin or biologic agents. Patients should be under the care of an experienced dermatologist and should be carefully monitored.
